Fuel Cells

PAFC Bus

SOFC Cross Section SEM

UF is considered to have one of the preeminent solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) research programs by the US Department of Energy (DOE), and has been active in phosphoric acid (PAFC) and proton exchange membrane (PEMFC) fuel cells for transportation for over a decade. In the last few years alone the SOFC program has received over $3M in research funding from DOE and NASA involving 8 faculty and 25 graduate students, and a DOE High Temperature Electrochemistry Center (HiTEC) was created at UF to advance this research. Research activities include:

  • Development of fuel cells for transportation, stationary and space applications

  • 10 years of PEMFC and PAFC R&D
    • Fuel cell bus demonstration
    • Research in PEMFC thermal management and fuel reformers
    • Fundamental investigations into electro/thermal/fluid transport and electrochemical research

  • 18 years of SOFC R&D (SOFCs operate on gasoline, diesel, natural gas and H2)
    • Development of novel higher performance SOFC electrolytes
    • Developed world record highest conductivity electrolyte
    • Development of novel higher performance SOFC cathodes
    • Fundamental investigations into performance-property relationships
    • Determined the fundamental relationship between ionic species and thermo-mechanical properties

  • UF-DOE High Temperature Electrochemistry Center
