The Powell Center for Construction and Environment offers a series of two-day educational sessions on the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program for the built environment. (www.treeo.ufl.edu/LEED).

The Educational Outreach activities include:

  • State of Florida continuing units courses on "green" building and C&D wastes management.
  • University of Florida curricula development on sustainable development and construction.
  • Deconstruction training for demolition contractors, developers, government entities, non-profit organizations and economic development entities.
  • Sustainability and Construction Ecology seminars
  • Sustainable community design charrettes

The Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC)

Dr. Pierce Jones was a founding member of PREC, established at the University of Florida in 2004. PREC supports the implementation of resource efficient community development practices through direct training, academic courses, and degree programs. The Program for Resource Efficient Communities coordinates research and outreach materials on energy efficient lighting, windows, and building construction.

The outreach efforts of the Program for Resource Efficient Communities has already helped several thousand licensed building professionals across Florida achieve their required continuing education units while promoting resource efficient design and construction practices. These course selections are continually expanding to meet the needs of a growing Florida.
