Assessment and Sustainable Practices

Sustainability Program

UF is the first university in the world to be designated a Certified Audubon Cooperative Society. This designation recognizes a high level of environmental stewardship including wildlife habitat management, resource conservation and outreach. UF is among the first major research universities in the nation to open an Office of Sustainability to coordinate academic and administrative efforts in this area. Some of the accomplishments are:

  • Energy Conservation
    • The office of Energy Conservation was established
    • The Carbon Neutrality initiative was launched
    • The Ecology, Conservation and Stewardship Committee was established
  • Green Building
    • UF received first GOLD Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building certification in the State
    • Currently ten projects are registered for LEED certification
  • Waste Management
    • UF recovers 40% of the total waste stream

Energy Assessment

Industrial Assessment Center (UF-IAC) has been established to perform energy audits and energy management for Florida industry. UF-IAC is funded by the US DOE as part of a national program. UF-IAC facilitates productivity improvements of small and medium-sized manufacturing facilities in Florida, South Alabama, and South Georgia through increased energy efficiency, waste minimization, operations efficiency. The UF-IAC performs twenty-five industrial assessments per year.
